As we approach the Halloween season, I always start to indulge in some of my favorite horror movies. I didn't plan to make a list this long, but when I started to make it, I realized how many I didn't want to leave off. So here we are with 30 of my absolute favorite ones, and this is just my opinion, not based off any critics or reviews, not trying to create arguments or controversy, just simply sharing some bone-chilling good horror Halloween fun that I thought you might enjoy. So Enjoy!
30. Carrie (1976)
To
start the list, we go to a Stephen King classic, I remember first seeing
"Carrie" with my siblings as a kid, and they kept telling me how
scary it was going to get. But it turned out at the end, I was quite happy she
gets those pricks back, and her psycho mom.
29. 30 Days of Night
I
have always dug the vampire genre, the notion that vampires were ruthless blood
suckers more so than sparkly sexy people, and this movie is a reminder of
that. The vamps are monsters, and the idea of being stuck way out in Alaska
with them for 30 days of night is pretty sick.
28. Black Christmas (1974)
Being
one of the few movies on my list I have only seen like once, I must say it
stuck with me. The line "it’s just me Billy" is always played in my
mind, partially because it's funny and partially because it is pretty creepy.
One of the creepiest parts of this movie is you never figure out who Billy even
is or what the hell is going on, which makes it creepier to me.
27. 28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later
I
am a huge fan of zombies, I love the films, and I even have a zombie hands tat.
So, I have seen my share of zombie flicks, and although these aren't
the last ones on my list, they are badass. These films seem very
realistic to me out of most of the zombie movies and shows I've seen and that
makes them scarier.
26. Trick r' Treat
I
saw this cool collection of Halloween tales woven together for the first time
in high school, and being as big of a Halloween fan as I am, it clicked with
me! Any movies that are based on or around Halloween make me like it that much
more, but this one in particular is done very well.
25. The Collector/The Collection
In
my opinion, some of the more under rated series on my list. I think "The
Collector" movies are a very cool modern-day horror slasher flicks we just
don't see as much now. But often overlooked and obviously very farfetched,
these movies are still a load of fun to watch.
24. Pumpkin Head
Another
more recently added title to my collection, but still great all the same. Every
season it seems I try to add a few more older horror movies to my library or at
least to my brain by just seeing them. But this one was really cool and will
really give you that Halloween feeling while viewing it.
23. Children of the Corn
The
second Stephen King classic on my list, is definitely one most will know. I am
currently working on all of the sequels still, but the first so far is the
best.
22. The Strangers
I
recently forced one of my younger cousins to watch this, and even though he
denies it, it scared him a lot. This movie grew on me over the years, it's such
a simple plot and story, yet it's very creepy. Who can forget the "Why are
you doing this?" question answered with a "because you were
home", I don't even get that scared of movies any more but that line is
chilling.
21. The Ring Trilogy
I'll
never forget when my sister was watching this when I was a kid, and I slowly
crept up our stairs, and popped up and scared the ever-living crap
out of her. These films are very creepy, and I needn't further explain if
you've seen them.
20. Clown
One
of the newer horror movies that has come out recently, I thought
"Clown" was awesome! I have a soft spot for clowns, I think they're fantastically
scary, but there's so many bad movies featuring killer clowns, but this one is
much more original and brings a new story to life.
19. The Amityville Horror (1979)
Here
is a classic you should definitely see if you haven't. One that scares many
because of the real legend behind the film. I have only seen 2 of the eighty
spin offs and sequels but this one will always hold the top spot.
18. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
I'm
sure if you're a huge Freddy Kruger fan, you'll probably scoff at the number
chosen, but honestly out of most of the big horror icons, Freddy is the silliest.
His jokes and talking make him slightly less scary (I realize it's a dark
comedy), and many of the sequels are bad, but the first is still a great
horror/dark comedy movie that everyone should see.
17.Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre Trilogy & The 2003 One
I
actually grew up on the 2003 version and thought it was terrifying in my
younger years, but the last few years I have attained and watched the original
trilogy and loved it! It lived up to the hype people have given it.
16. The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
I
had recently watched the original and I could see if people were also terrified
of that one back then, because growing up this movie scared the shit out of me.
I also recently made two of my cousins watch this one, and man they were
scared. But I loved watching them watch it, one of my favorite parts of this
movie is the music, so well done, and of course the most badass dog to grace
our screens.
15. Halloween (2007)
I
really don't care if you hate this one, cause guess what? I watched this one
for about seven years before I saw the original ones. The original is
better to me too and you'll see that shortly, however I think this movie is
very well done, and one of Rob Zombie's best. I love slasher flicks as well,
and watching huge Michael kick the shit out of everyone is fun.
14. Poltergeist (1982)
One
of the more toned-down films on the list but still technically a spooky horror
movie all the same. "Poltergeist" is a great Segway film for those
new to the horror genre. But in my mind it's an instant classic, and
I watch it every Halloween.
13. The Exorcist
Coming
in fittingly enough at number 13, is "The Exorcist". This movie is
creepy no matter how old you get, and just knowing all the creepy shit that
went down making it, gives you a chill.
12. Final Destination 1, 2, 3, (Not 4), & 5
One
thing I love is when suddenly Hollywood gives you a good original idea. I
think the concept behind these movies is brilliant, and for the fact you have
no physical killer. It's just death, and the fucked-up ways it tries
to kill everyone is fun to watch in all the films, except 4, I pretend
that one doesn't exist. but the awesome twist at the end of 5 is another
reason this series ranks higher up to me.
11. Scream
All
of the Scream films are pretty good, but one is a lot more iconic. I loved how
they referenced so many movies before it, but came up with a completely new
idea. "Scream" is the original teen slasher flick of the 90s that so
many aspired to be afterwards.
10. Jeepers Creepers 1 & 2
Looking
back, I believe the first "Jeepers Creepers" is the first real horror
movie I watched when I was in 5th grade. And man, oh man was I scared as all
hell. The drain pipe scene use to give me nightmares, and then the ending. The
second one was worse, with that cornfield scene, to this day, I find corn
fields slightly creepy. But as an adult, you can tell these movies don't hold
up over time quite as well as others.
9. Halloween (1978)
I
have seen every "Halloween" movie at this point, and they're a fun
series to watch. But the first is pretty great, and anytime you introduce some
younger people or new people to horror movies, this should be somewhere up at
the top of your list.
8. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
To
me this is one of the few times, where the remake is better than the original. Don’t
get me wrong the original is good. But I think this is my favorite zombie flick
out of them all. The characters are good, it’s interesting the whole way
through, and the music is great. I would’ve loved a sequel to this one.
7. House of 1000 corpses/ The Devils Rejects
Two
of Rob Zombies best films I do believe, I think for the sheer originality these
films bring, they deserve this spot. The Devils Rejects is so unique in its
more focused on the killers than the victims, like at the end, you almost are
like damn I kind of feel bad for this family.
6. Psycho (1960)
Ah
a bonified classic, how can one forget. A movie that redefined horror and took
more risks than you’d know by watching it now. Anthony Perkins is brilliant as
Norman Bates, and all of the sequels he’s in deserve a watch. The new show “Bates
Motel” does this film a lot of justice and I recommend highly. Also, fun fact,
if you didn’t know, Janet Leigh who plays the main protagonist is Jamie Lee
Curtis’s mother!
5. IT (2017)
Yes,
let me hear the heat, the original “IT” doesn’t make my list, but this one is
top five!? I must be crazy! Not really, to me other than Tim Curry, there
really isn’t anything memorable to me of the original, but this one was
absolutely awesome in every way. It isn’t often now a days I see a horror
movie, and am blown away by it, like a new favorite movie type of feel. But
after seeing this one, I can confidently say I do indeed. Bill Skarsgard was
amazing as Pennywise in a whole new way. Some of the scenes made me smile from
ear to ear. And the kids were all great actors and very believable.
4. The Purge Trilogy
I
also can feel the hate already for this one, but hey I think it’s funny people
bitch 24/7 about Hollywood not being original, and then they make something as
awesome as the Purge movies and people are like well that wouldn’t happen! For
one are you sure about that? And two who cares it’s all in good fun. I agree
the first isn’t the best way they could’ve done it, but the second is awesome
to me. I love this trilogy, and I hope we get to see more of this concept on
screen.
3. The Cabin in the Woods
Again,
to me, mind blowing! The end of this movie had me like WTF!? But in a good way,
I have re- watched many times, and every time I see a new monster at the end. I
commend greatly to the creators of this film for trying something new! I always
hear a mixed reaction to this one, but I’m surprised most true horror genre
fans don’t love it, there’s so many nods to all the classics at the end. The
last twenty minutes are just incredible. I wish so badly we’d get a sequel of
some sorts to this. Imagine all of the horror running amuck around the world!
2. Saw Series
I
personally feel grateful to grow up when the “Saw” movies were coming out. The generations
before me got the Halloweens, Nightmare on Elm Streets, Friday the 13ths, and
so many more horror movies that spanned tons of sequels. But we got” Saw” and
what makes “Saw” better to me than some of those is the fact every movie is
important to the overall story. The ending in the final chapter to me was
fucking epic! I am a little skeptic the new “Jigsaw” movie is coming out,
hopefully it only adds to the awesomeness of this series, I will be in theaters
the first weekend it’s out.
1.Friday the 13th Series
This was extremely
difficult to place all these movies in order and I’m still skeptical on a few
at the top. However, I really do love “The Friday the 13ths” movies. What’s
funny is I don’t think that first one is the best one at all. In fact, to me 3 through
8 are the best ones, where we get classic Jason killing everything in
sight. Sure, they have super cheesy
moments, and it’s very unrealistic, but that’s why it’s fun to watch. Jason is
my favorite horror icon after all.
