The 32 Best Disney Villains

Lately I can’t get enough of Disney, after being at Disney World. I’ve been on a binge lately. One of the best parts of any Disney movie, is the villain. In fact, a lot of the time they are the best parts of the movie in my opinion. With that said, I decided to rank the 32 most memorable Disney villains, which is practically all of them. I tried to rank them by their villainous ways, over just who are my favorites personally.

Oogie Boogie- Honorable Mention (The Nightmare Before Christmas)

Since he isn’t technically from a Walt Disney animated studios film, he didn’t make the list. But I thought he was worth an honorable mention. Oogie Boogie is from one of my all-time favorite movies, with that said he is kind of a goofball villain. He’s just a sinister bag of bugs, and really has no motivation, he’s just there to do evil stuff to whatever Lock, Shock, and Barrel throw at him. But he did try to kill Santa Claus himself!

32.  Captain Gantu (Lilo and Stitch)

To start the list, we go into outer space. As big and scary as Gantu looks. He’s not much of a villain. He’s mostly just doing his job. He gets a little obsessed with the little blue guy, and ends up kidnapping Lilo as well. But Stitch saves the day, and Gantu ends up getting himself exiled to Earth for his incompetence.  If you’ve seen the TV show, he ends up being their main antagonist, so he does get pushed into being a bigger villain.

31.  Madame Medusa (The Rescuers)

Coming in second to last is Madame Medusa. Originally, I was going to leave her off the list, but I just watched “The Rescuers” the other night, and she is worthy of making the list. Let’s see she kidnaps the cutest kid you can think of and shoves her down a small hole that fills with water regularly. All to get her grimy hands on some Jewel. She could care less about the child, or even her own chubby partner. Some say she’s a rip off of Cruella de Vil but I don’t see how, other than she’s an enraged middle aged psycho of a woman. Also, she has two huge crocodiles as pets, and that’s pretty scary.

30.  Prince John (Robin Hood)

As far as being scary and intelligent, Prince John doesn’t take the cake. But as far as being villainous he does quite well. The evil little momma’s boy had his brother and true king hypnotized by his snake sidekick Sir Hiss, and sent him away. All the while he taxed the crap out of the village animals all over the land. They show just how far he’s willing to go when he sends his Sheriff pal to take from the church, children and the disabled. He also, will have Robin Hood killed in front of Maid Marian if he had his way. Luckily, he’s sent to jail when all is said and done.

29. Bill Sykes (Oliver and Company)

Probably an over looked villain in all the Disney movies out there, is Bill Sykes. He may be your typical shady business man (or loan Shark) in the start of the film. But he strikes true fear in to the heart of Fagin and his pets. He also has his two intimidating dog bodyguards Roscoe and DeSoto, the Doberman pinschers, who put the beating on the Dodger and his pals. A dark Disney moment is when both die on the train tracks, being electrocuted to death after a scrap with Dodger and Oliver. Sykes not only threatens Fagin’s life, but he also kidnaps jenny, Oliver’s new lovable little girl owner. And goes to great lengths including putting his own life in danger to kill Fagin and his friends, which ultimately leads to his demise.

28.  Turbo AKA King Candy (Wreck-it-Ralph)

Now here we have a villain who comes with a twist. The first time I watched it, I actually had no clue and took me by surprise but after re-watching there were some signs. King Candy secretly being Turbo, and controlling the game of the “sweet” little candy racers was pretty brilliant on his part. The deranged racer was almost wiped out when his game he conquered was unplugged, and so he snuck into Sugar Rush and disguised himself as King Candy. He tried to have Vanellope’s code deleted, to keep her out of the game and let himself continue to conquer it. But luckily with Ralph’s help, they manage to make him reveal himself which leads to his end when he goes a little crazy and the Cy-bugs take over Sugar Rush.

27. Edgar Balthazar (The Aristocats)

Not such and intimidating villain but a villain all the same. Edgar is as slimy as they come, first he steals poor Madame Bonfamille's beloved cats who are her only family, and then tries to dump them in the country side or possibly kill them because he over hears that she’s leaving her fortunes to the cats and not him. But luckily the two countryside dogs put a stop to him, just because well they don’t like him. But Duchess and her kittens get dumped still and have to find their way home, and once they do, he still tries to ship them to Timbuctoo, (THEY ARE CUTE LITTLE KITTENS DUDE!) but luckily with the alley cat’s help, they end up sending him there instead and all ends well, except well for him.

26.  Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland)

Even though she may be among one of the more popular Disney villains, the Queen of hearts is mostly just an angry old crazy woman. Sure, she has the entire kingdom under her thumb, including the king. But she’s only a small portion of the entire movie. Alice bests her and manages to escape. The Queen needs some anger management classes.

25.  Rattigan (The Great Mouse Detective)

Rattigan is a pretty good villain overall. He has a wonderful yet odd plan to become the new ruler, and he kidnaps a mouse toy maker to enact his plan. He’s kind of a diva at times, despite his in denial about being a rat. But when push comes to shove he shows his true rat ways and puts the beatdown on basil. His weird little bat henchman always creeped me out as a kid. Plus, we can’t forget he’s a rat with a cat as a pet.

24.   Yzma (The Emperor’s New Groove)

Yzma is one of the funnier villains on the list. Her and Kronk easily have some of the funniest moments in the movie. Her first mistake is trusting Kronk with anything though, her plan would actually have been a good one. If not for turning Kuzco into a lama instead of killing him. She’s a nasty old woman, but once she goes full kitty at the end, she loses some of her villainous ways, and that puts her down the list.

23.  Assistant Mayor Bellwether (Zootopia)

We are at a point now where movies all the way in 2016 are making these lists. And although you may be thinking how did this little sheep make it this far up the list. Well let’s see, for one she is a great liar, this twist took everyone by surprise I do believe. She was going to use this poisonous flower to turn many of the predator’s savage and completely ruin their reputation. All for her own political gain. You have to have some sympathy for her when the mayor treated her like crap, it’s no wonder she hated predators. She doesn’t make it farther on the list due to all the political prowess it takes her to try and gain power, rather by magic or strength, but for being a little sheep it’s pretty impressive.

22. Hans (Frozen)

The last movie on this list I finally have seen, it took me long enough. But I can now put Hans at number 22 confidently. He does a really good job of making you believe he is that stereotypical prince from the start that any woman would love. But think about the true disgusting person he really is to not just lie to someone but to be able to lie about being in love with Anna, and then leave her for dead like he did is truly horrendous. Then he tries to murder Elsa as well, and take their kingdom, a punch to the face from Anna is not enough for this guy. She surely should have frozen him solid for eternity.

21. Yokai (Robert Callaghan) (Big Hero 6)

This is Disney’s first shot at a Marvel movie turned animated under their belt. The villain is pretty good, just not great. He does however have justifying reasons for his actions, to try and save his daughter. But to steal Hiro’s tech, he sets the university he works at on fire, and Hiro’s brother goes in after Robert Callaghan and ends up paying the price thanks to this fool. He then terrorizes anyone who gets in his way, including Hiro, Baymax and all their friends. His mask and micro bot’s tech is pretty sweet, but he’s defeated a little too easily in the end in my opinion. Hopefully the sequel will see an eviler and stronger villain.

20. Commander Rourke (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)

I don’t usually see this guy on many lists of villains, but don’t count him out completely. Let’s not forget he did lie to Milo, not just a lie, but he had Milo lead him to a secret society to the world that only Milo knew how to get to through the book. Then once they got there, he turned his lovable crew into gun wielding soldiers. He was ready to completely wipe out all the Atlanteans by stealing their power source. Just for his own greed. He even ends up turning on his trusted right hand woman, and murdering her by kicking her off the hot air balloon. Commander Rourke is kind of a crazy one.

19.   Sherkhan (The Jungle Book)

I could catch flack for not putting him higher up on the list, but let’s be honest, he’s a tiger out to eat a boy who could barely kill a fly. But he doesn’t even get close to doing so. As polite as he is, you have to feel bad for him for the fact man killed his whole family. So, his vengeance is for a reason, but Kaa comes closer to getting Mowgli than he does. If we were talking about the live action Sherkhan he’d be much higher.  All the same he is a ruthless man eater, who is still among the best villains Disney has made.

18.  Chernabog (Fantasia)

Chernabog is the stuff nightmares are made of. If you’ve seen fantasia as a child, you probably were slightly chilled when “Night on Bald Mountain” came on, I sure was. If Chernabog was a villain in a full-length movie, he’d surely be the scariest one. But for only being a part of a small short, and summoning demons and whatnot in that time, he still earns his place among the others. He’s basically Satan after all.

17. Mother Gothel (Tangled)

Mother Gothel might not be a very intimidating villain at first glance. But think about how sadistic she really is. She stole two people’s baby and lied to said baby about being her mother growing up and loving her. But all Rapunzel ever was to her was a head full of magical hair to keep her youth. She locks her in a tower for 18 years! And makes her fear the outside world. Once Rapunzel figures this out, Mother Gothel has no problem locking her away just to use her for her hair. After all that time raising her, this bitch still has no love for Rapunzel what so ever. She also tried to murder Rapunzel’s only friend and love she’s ever had in Flynn Rider, by stabbing him in front of her. Watching the little gecko trip her out the window, and seeing her turn into a bag of dust is great.

16. Dr. Facilier (The Princess and the Frog)

I actually think Dr. Facilier is a pretty great villain. The voodoo man with a plan, sending those freaky shadow demon things after the frogs is awesome. He also, has no problem having that little weird fat dude deceive Tiana’s princess friend into marrying him for her riches. He would also kill her father if his plan would’ve worked. And he killed Raymond the lovable firefly! Dr. Facilier is the best part of the movie honestly. Making deals, and changing the plans after the fact has a very Ursula vibe to it, they’d probably get along well.

15. John Silver (Treasure Planet)

John Silver the cyborg is in the middle part of the countdown for good reason. By the end of the film he’s not even really a full-fledged villain. He gives up his treasure dream to save Jim, who originally, he thought was expendable to him. One of the reasons I love him though, is he isn’t so black and white. He isn’t just evil because, and he does actually care about Jim. Some might argue that should put him lower here, but I believe for being different and something new he deserves this spot. Plus, we can’t forget he has a ruthless rag tag group of pirates following him, and he has morph as a sidekick, who’s well just awesome.

   14. Lady Tremaine (Cinderella)

Before Mother Gothel was psychologically torturing Rapunzel, Lady Tremaine and her nasty daughters were doing it to Cinderella. She might not have powers or sorcery at her disposal, but Lady Tremaine is a wicked step mother, she’s been giving step mothers a bad rep ever since. Think about how messed up one has to be to torture someone like Cinderella like she does.

13. Captain Hook (Peter Pan)

Captain Hook actually has a valid reason for wanting to kill Peter Pan. The little brat cut off his hand and fed it to a crocodile. Captain Hook is known for being one of the first Disney villains who brought a sense of humor to a villain character which is what makes him so interesting. Whether or not that was planned by the creators, it worked out. A swash buckling pirate trying kill a bunch of little kids though, is pretty villainous if I don’t say so myself.

12. Governor John Ratcliffe (Pocahontas)

Here we have a somewhat historically accurate figure. I’m not sure anyone considers Governor John Ratcliffe a great villain, or one of their favorites. But he is pretty despicable all the same. The man wanted to kill all the Indians if necessary, just for some gold to make himself rich. He didn’t care about his men’s well beings and certainly not invading the Indians land. He also leads the bone chilling song “Savages”, even though in the end he was betrayed by his own men and rightfully so since he accidentally shoots John Smith when he was aiming for the chief. The saddest part is men like him were the victorious ones in the real stories.

11. Clayton (Tarzan)

Clayton is one of those villains you just hate with a passion and here’s why; there are way too many real Claytons in real life. He is nothing but a poacher and a man with a gun who thinks he’s something special. He tricks poor Jane, her dad, and even Tarzan himself into leading him to the Gorillas nesting grounds. (Although they are a poor judge of character, since it’s kind of obvious he’s shady as hell) He then locks all of them up in the ship and goes on a poaching spree with his fellow men. They then unmercifully toss gorillas in cages and nets. He even ends up killing Kerchak in a tear inducing moment in front of Tarzan. But at least he gets his dues in the end, he kills himself in one of Disney’s darker moments, by unintentionally hanging himself from a vine.

10. Shan Yu (Mulan)

Here we have another somewhat of an historically accurate villain, which is what makes Shan Yu terrifying along with his fellow Huns. He might not say much but his actions speak louder than words. The scene of him saying “besides, the little girl will be missing her doll, we should return it to her” always gave me chills. Then you later see they destroyed an entire city, possibly killing thousands, including whatever poor little girl that was. They also, take over the Emperor’s palace and almost kill him if not for Mulan. We also can’t forget he has a badass pet falcon as a pet.

9.   Hades (Hercules)

Hades is personally one of my favorite villains on the list. With that said though he only makes it number nine because despite his sarcastic personality and hot temper that make him great he doesn’t get too far in “Hercules”. Here you have a god of he under world, and yet he sends Pain and Panic, the two most incompetent henchmen there is to kill Hercules, which they don’t succeed in even turning him completely human first. However, this was Hades plan, to turn Zeus’s poor son into a human to kill him, which is messed up in itself. Then he sends every monster after Hercules once he finds out he’s still alive. He also, unleashes the locked away Titans on Mount Olympus to try and take over. His track record speaks for itself. But let’s not forget the worst thing he does is use Meg’s soul against her to trick Hercules into loving her, which ultimately gets her killed until Hercules can save her soul.

8. Ursula (The Little Mermaid)

Here is one sea witch we can really get behind as a villain. I mean what kind of twisted monster would want to hurt poor little Ariel and her little fish friend Flounder? She uses Ariel’s biggest dream against her by stealing her voice to make her human in a twisted deal, and let’s not forget she turns people into those poor unfortunate souls once they can’t “fulfill” the deal, usually because she makes it so. She’s as wicked as they come with her eel sidekicks, who will forever make me look at eels as creepy.

7. Jafar (Aladdin)

Jafar and his annoying parrot sidekick make it this far for their cunning lying ways. He not only tries to force Jasmine to marry him so he can kill her once he takes over Agrabah but he also essentially kills all of Aladdin’s friends before it gets undone. He turns Carpet into yarn, Abu into a toy, and almost drowns Jasmine in a giant hourglass. Jafar is as much of a snake as they come.

6. Gaston (Beauty and the Beast)

Once you read that name, you instantly want to start singing “No one hits like Gaston, matches wits like Gaston!” and well you get the gist. But this guy’s ego and arrogance make him a higher up on the Disney villain list. He not only truly believes Bell will fall in love with him no matter how selfish and jerky he acts, but he goes to great lengths to force her to be with him. The man plans to have her father sent to an insane asylum if she doesn’t marry him! He also leads and angry mob to the Beast’s castle (who he’s never even met) and almost successfully kills the Beast. For a man with a small brain, big muscles, and no magical powers, he certainly earns this place on the list as a memorable maniacal Disney villain.

5.  The Evil Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves)

The Evil Queen is the original Disney villain, coming in at number five, she has been around since the start of it all. The ONLY reason she wants to kill Snow White so bad is simply because she wants to be the fairest of them all. I mean that’s it, she turns psycho killer just for that. She sends a hunter after Snow White, who by the way is super innocent and hasn’t done shit to the queen besides sing to birds and bunnies. But when that doesn’t work, the queen turns herself into that creepy old lady, she use to give me the creeps as a kid. Then poisons poor little Snow White with the famous red apple. But all in all she tumbles off a cliff at the end, so she takes herself out basically.

4.   Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmations)

Although she has no super powers, let’s be honest, Cruella de Vil is as evil as they come. She wants to not only kill the Dalmatians, but she wants their skin! I mean have we ever really thought about how psychotic she is, that she wants to skin a bunch of adorable puppies. She’s a villain to the core.

3. Claude Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Coming in at number three from an under rated Disney movie is the city of Paris’s Minister of Justice Claude Frollo. This movie was never really understood as a kid, but when you watch it as an adult you realize how messed up this guy really is. He sings and entire song called Hellfire, all about how the gypsy Esmeralda gets his juices flowing and he can’t help it. To stop this, he must kill all the gypsies, and he will burn down all of Paris to find every last one of them! Let’s not forget he killed Quasimodo’s mother, and then almost killed Quasimodo himself as an infant, but instead locked him away in a bell tower all of his life and told him he was too hideous for the public to see…yeah Frollo definitely belongs in the top five.

2.  Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)

Maleficent will always be known as one of the greatest villains of all-time, and with good reason I mean she is “the mistress of all evil”. Many villains on this list were evil for reasons of wanting power, riches, and revenge. Maleficent? Well she was just pissed she wasn’t invited to the party. I guess it was sort of revenge. But she deserves this spot all the same, I mean she can turn into a dragon and she put a young girl into a coma essentially.  She’s surrounded by demons and has a pet crow named Diablo. She’s simply evil just because she’s evil, and that in itself is quite scary.

1. Scar (The Lion King)
Coming in at number one had to be none other than Scar. This may seem bias because The Lion King is one of my favorite movies of all-time, but let’s look at Scar’s villain track record, shall we? He not only killed his brother Mufasa himself, but he convinced his nephew Simba that it was his fault. Then in turn let loose his hyena henchmen on Simba to kill him as well. Not many villains on this list actually kill anyone but Scar manages to make his plan work all the way to taking over the animal kingdom with his hyena army and making his sister in law and the other lionesses his hunting slaves. He even turns on his own hyenas when push comes to shove. Scar truly is the evilest of them all, and let us not forget he has also has the best villain musical number in BE PREPARED!

Agree or disagree with the list? Who's your favorite villain?
