I went
into Doctor Strange a lot less excited than I usually am for a Marvel movie.
Which is weird for me, because usually I am all gung-ho to see them. Not that I
wasn’t excited at all, but I guess I just didn’t know much about Doctor Strange
to begin with, and he never peaked my interest. Not like Guardians of the
Galaxy who I also knew nothing about going in, but they seemed more interesting.
Any who I was glad my excitement was increased as time went by in the movie.
Doctor Strange was pretty awesome over all. The effects are absolutely amazing,
the fighting scenes where walls and doors are twisted and even the city itself,
all intertwining is pretty great. I will say if you are like me (not a comic
fan, but love the movies), you should pay attention in this one. I felt I was
right there with Stephen Strange learning everything he was. I knew literally
none of this. But that was okay because it all felt fresh and new.
Benedict
Cumberbatch did a great job as Stephen Strange, I will say to me he was the
most unlikeable MCU character for most of the movie. I think that was the
point, by the end he learns his way, but it was hard to feel sorry for him
through most of the movie. I’ve seen several others compare him to Tony Stark,
and I don’t see it. I mean yeah he’s rich, super smart, and conceded but tony
is a lot funnier and seems a lot less of a prick than Strange to me. Rachel McAdams,
Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tilda Swinton all were great. I was happy to see Rachel
apart of the MCU, she’s always been good in everything she’s done. I thought it
was really great his cape had it’s own personality too, I never knew that, and
it was pretty funny. The humor wasn’t as prominent in this film as the past few
Marvel films I thought, but there were definitely still some really funny
moments, most with scenes the character Wong was in. The villains were kind of “meh” to me, I mean
I thought for an origin story it worked well, I was definitely disappointed
with barely seeing Dormammu. Hopefully we see him again at some point. The most
frequent villain being Kaecilius, who wasn’t too bad of a villain in his own right, it was
interesting how he was very similar to Strange in his start. But overall like I
said a good origin story.
This
movie did however change the MCU as we know, for one it introduced magic into
the MCU. But more importantly it introduced the multi-verse. I think this is
going to change things a lot. I mean it’s basically a whole secret thing that
has been there the whole time, but is now revealed. I cannot wait until Doctor
Strange and Tony Stark meet. The thought of those two, the guardians of the
galaxy, and spider-man altogether is too much to handle. Imagine those
conversations. But it will be interesting to see how he uses his powers in a
team setting. The fact he has the fifth infinity stone, also brings him into
the fray with the rest of them, and will attract Thanos I’m sure. There are two
credit scenes, one which sets up a sequel (which I did not see coming at all)
and one that might indicate how he will be mixing it up with the Avengers
eventually. Overall pretty solid film, its run time is 115 minutes, but it felt
like a half hour, which is always a good thing. I give it an 8 out of 10. We
are at number 14 of the MCU movies can you believe that!
