Favorite Horror Movies of all Time

Image result for horror movie icons

As we approach the Halloween season, I always start to indulge in some of my favorite horror movies. I didn't plan to make a list this long, but when I started to make it, I realized how many I didn't want to leave off. So here we are with 30 of my absolute favorite ones, and this is just my opinion, not based off any critics or reviews, not trying to create arguments or controversy, just simply sharing some bone-chilling good horror Halloween fun that I thought you might enjoy. So Enjoy!

30. Carrie (1976)

To start the list, we go to a Stephen King classic, I remember first seeing "Carrie" with my siblings as a kid, and they kept telling me how scary it was going to get. But it turned out at the end, I was quite happy she gets those pricks back, and her psycho mom.

29. 30 Days of Night

I have always dug the vampire genre, the notion that vampires were ruthless blood suckers more so than sparkly sexy people, and this movie is a reminder of that. The vamps are monsters, and the idea of being stuck way out in Alaska with them for 30 days of night is pretty sick.

28. Black Christmas (1974)

Being one of the few movies on my list I have only seen like once, I must say it stuck with me. The line "it’s just me Billy" is always played in my mind, partially because it's funny and partially because it is pretty creepy. One of the creepiest parts of this movie is you never figure out who Billy even is or what the hell is going on, which makes it creepier to me.

27. 28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later

I am a huge fan of zombies, I love the films, and I even have a zombie hands tat. So, I have seen my share of zombie flicks, and although these aren't the last ones on my list, they are badass. These films seem very realistic to me out of most of the zombie movies and shows I've seen and that makes them scarier.

26. Trick r' Treat

I saw this cool collection of Halloween tales woven together for the first time in high school, and being as big of a Halloween fan as I am, it clicked with me! Any movies that are based on or around Halloween make me like it that much more, but this one in particular is done very well.

25. The Collector/The Collection

In my opinion, some of the more under rated series on my list. I think "The Collector" movies are a very cool modern-day horror slasher flicks we just don't see as much now. But often overlooked and obviously very farfetched, these movies are still a load of fun to watch.
Image result for pumpkinhead movie

24. Pumpkin Head

Another more recently added title to my collection, but still great all the same. Every season it seems I try to add a few more older horror movies to my library or at least to my brain by just seeing them. But this one was really cool and will really give you that Halloween feeling while viewing it.

Image result for children of the corn

23. Children of the Corn

The second Stephen King classic on my list, is definitely one most will know. I am currently working on all of the sequels still, but the first so far is the best.

22. The Strangers

I recently forced one of my younger cousins to watch this, and even though he denies it, it scared him a lot. This movie grew on me over the years, it's such a simple plot and story, yet it's very creepy. Who can forget the "Why are you doing this?" question answered with a "because you were home", I don't even get that scared of movies any more but that line is chilling.
Image result for the ring

21. The Ring Trilogy

I'll never forget when my sister was watching this when I was a kid, and I slowly crept up our stairs, and popped up and scared the ever-living crap out of her. These films are very creepy, and I needn't further explain if you've seen them.
Image result for clown movie

20. Clown

One of the newer horror movies that has come out recently, I thought "Clown" was awesome! I have a soft spot for clowns, I think they're fantastically scary, but there's so many bad movies featuring killer clowns, but this one is much more original and brings a new story to life.

Image result for amityville horror 1979

19. The Amityville Horror (1979)

Here is a classic you should definitely see if you haven't. One that scares many because of the real legend behind the film. I have only seen 2 of the eighty spin offs and sequels but this one will always hold the top spot.
Image result for nightmare on elm street 1984

18. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

I'm sure if you're a huge Freddy Kruger fan, you'll probably scoff at the number chosen, but honestly out of most of the big horror icons, Freddy is the silliest. His jokes and talking make him slightly less scary (I realize it's a dark comedy), and many of the sequels are bad, but the first is still a great horror/dark comedy movie that everyone should see.

Image result for texas chainsaw massacre 1974

17.Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre Trilogy & The 2003 One

I actually grew up on the 2003 version and thought it was terrifying in my younger years, but the last few years I have attained and watched the original trilogy and loved it! It lived up to the hype people have given it.

16. The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

I had recently watched the original and I could see if people were also terrified of that one back then, because growing up this movie scared the shit out of me. I also recently made two of my cousins watch this one, and man they were scared. But I loved watching them watch it, one of my favorite parts of this movie is the music, so well done, and of course the most badass dog to grace our screens.

Image result for halloween 2007

15. Halloween (2007)

I really don't care if you hate this one, cause guess what? I watched this one for about seven years before I saw the original ones. The original is better to me too and you'll see that shortly, however I think this movie is very well done, and one of Rob Zombie's best. I love slasher flicks as well, and watching huge Michael kick the shit out of everyone is fun.

Image result for poltergeist 1982

14. Poltergeist (1982)

One of the more toned-down films on the list but still technically a spooky horror movie all the same. "Poltergeist" is a great Segway film for those new to the horror genre. But in my mind it's an instant classic, and I watch it every Halloween.

Image result for exorcist

13. The Exorcist

Coming in fittingly enough at number 13, is "The Exorcist". This movie is creepy no matter how old you get, and just knowing all the creepy shit that went down making it, gives you a chill.

12. Final Destination 1, 2, 3, (Not 4), & 5

One thing I love is when suddenly Hollywood gives you a good original idea. I think the concept behind these movies is brilliant, and for the fact you have no physical killer. It's just death, and the fucked-up ways it tries to kill everyone is fun to watch in all the films, except 4, I pretend that one doesn't exist. but the awesome twist at the end of 5 is another reason this series ranks higher up to me.

Image result for Scream

11. Scream

All of the Scream films are pretty good, but one is a lot more iconic. I loved how they referenced so many movies before it, but came up with a completely new idea. "Scream" is the original teen slasher flick of the 90s that so many aspired to be afterwards.

10. Jeepers Creepers 1 & 2

Looking back, I believe the first "Jeepers Creepers" is the first real horror movie I watched when I was in 5th grade. And man, oh man was I scared as all hell. The drain pipe scene use to give me nightmares, and then the ending. The second one was worse, with that cornfield scene, to this day, I find corn fields slightly creepy. But as an adult, you can tell these movies don't hold up over time quite as well as others.

Image result for halloween 1978

9. Halloween (1978)

I have seen every "Halloween" movie at this point, and they're a fun series to watch. But the first is pretty great, and anytime you introduce some younger people or new people to horror movies, this should be somewhere up at the top of your list.

8. Dawn of the Dead (2004)

To me this is one of the few times, where the remake is better than the original. Don’t get me wrong the original is good. But I think this is my favorite zombie flick out of them all. The characters are good, it’s interesting the whole way through, and the music is great. I would’ve loved a sequel to this one.

Image result for house of a 1000 corpses devils rejects

7. House of 1000 corpses/ The Devils Rejects

Two of Rob Zombies best films I do believe, I think for the sheer originality these films bring, they deserve this spot. The Devils Rejects is so unique in its more focused on the killers than the victims, like at the end, you almost are like damn I kind of feel bad for this family.
Image result for psycho 1960

6. Psycho (1960)

Ah a bonified classic, how can one forget. A movie that redefined horror and took more risks than you’d know by watching it now. Anthony Perkins is brilliant as Norman Bates, and all of the sequels he’s in deserve a watch. The new show “Bates Motel” does this film a lot of justice and I recommend highly. Also, fun fact, if you didn’t know, Janet Leigh who plays the main protagonist is Jamie Lee Curtis’s mother!

5. IT (2017)

Yes, let me hear the heat, the original “IT” doesn’t make my list, but this one is top five!? I must be crazy! Not really, to me other than Tim Curry, there really isn’t anything memorable to me of the original, but this one was absolutely awesome in every way. It isn’t often now a days I see a horror movie, and am blown away by it, like a new favorite movie type of feel. But after seeing this one, I can confidently say I do indeed. Bill Skarsgard was amazing as Pennywise in a whole new way. Some of the scenes made me smile from ear to ear. And the kids were all great actors and very believable.

Image result for purge movies

4. The Purge Trilogy

I also can feel the hate already for this one, but hey I think it’s funny people bitch 24/7 about Hollywood not being original, and then they make something as awesome as the Purge movies and people are like well that wouldn’t happen! For one are you sure about that? And two who cares it’s all in good fun. I agree the first isn’t the best way they could’ve done it, but the second is awesome to me. I love this trilogy, and I hope we get to see more of this concept on screen.

3. The Cabin in the Woods

Again, to me, mind blowing! The end of this movie had me like WTF!? But in a good way, I have re- watched many times, and every time I see a new monster at the end. I commend greatly to the creators of this film for trying something new! I always hear a mixed reaction to this one, but I’m surprised most true horror genre fans don’t love it, there’s so many nods to all the classics at the end. The last twenty minutes are just incredible. I wish so badly we’d get a sequel of some sorts to this. Imagine all of the horror running amuck around the world!

2. Saw Series

I personally feel grateful to grow up when the “Saw” movies were coming out. The generations before me got the Halloweens, Nightmare on Elm Streets, Friday the 13ths, and so many more horror movies that spanned tons of sequels. But we got” Saw” and what makes “Saw” better to me than some of those is the fact every movie is important to the overall story. The ending in the final chapter to me was fucking epic! I am a little skeptic the new “Jigsaw” movie is coming out, hopefully it only adds to the awesomeness of this series, I will be in theaters the first weekend it’s out.

1.Friday the 13th Series

This was extremely difficult to place all these movies in order and I’m still skeptical on a few at the top. However, I really do love “The Friday the 13ths” movies. What’s funny is I don’t think that first one is the best one at all. In fact, to me 3 through 8 are the best ones, where we get classic Jason killing everything in sight.  Sure, they have super cheesy moments, and it’s very unrealistic, but that’s why it’s fun to watch. Jason is my favorite horror icon after all.

Recommended Song and Movie of the Week

Recommended Song

For the song this week I could go with no other than my boys in Hollywood Undead! They're back and their new album comes out October 27th. Its called V, their fifth studio album. The first single is California Dreaming. It's a pretty badass straight Hollywood Undead track.

Recommended Movie

I'm going way way back in time for the movie this week, opposite of last weeks. The movie this week is going to "To Kill a Mockingbird" from 1962. I recently had read the book, and it was great, I recommend that too. The book is a little better, but the movie does it justice as well. To me this story was ahead of it's time, and the sad part is many of the things Atticus says about racial segregation still stands to this day, 50 years later! How messed up is that? The story is told from the perspective of a little girl when she's older, Scout Finch, her and her brother Jem go on little adventures in their neighborhood in 1930s America. But their father Atticus is defending a black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman. Atticus is an amazing character to me, and his wisdom and advice should be things we all bear in mind. Since it's older I couldn't find a trailer, but here is an iconic scene from it, and one where you should listen to every word.

Recommended Song and Movie the Week

I haven't been keeping up with this, and I apologize if you're a die hard follower ( I know yeah right). But this week I have a couple good ones.

Recommended Song

The Song this week goes to a brand new song, fresh out of the studio from a familiar band known as Theory of a Deadman, and that song is "RX". This song will be stuck in your for days, you've been warned. It actually inspired my latest story "Dark Days", you can probably figure out why if you've read it. To me this is the type of song, that will make you want to pre-order the new album, and I did just that two days ago.

Recommended Movie

This summer I've seen a couple of new films in theaters, that I thought were awesome. But I have noticed reviewers don't agree and one such movie that really bothers me with this is "Spider-Man: Homecoming. usually I choose movies that are either not blockbusters or are older. But I'm going with this brand new one. Here's why, people need to not be thrown off by the bad reviews. I watch all of the Marvel and the DC movies coming out, I rank "Spider-Man: Homecoming" right up there in my top 5 Marvel movies. This movie is probably one of the funniest Marvel films next to "Guardians of the Galaxy", and it's got a lot of heart. Tom Holland to me is the perfect Peter Parker, and it's fun to see a super hero story before the hero becomes some big bad ass. He's a kid, fighting in an adult world he doesn't understand. People's problem with Tony Stark being in the film a total of like ten minutes throughout the movie, blows my mind. He's getting Peter started, what's the point of having 16 marvel movies that now connect, with more to come, and not having characters cross over with one another. It would actually be a lot more unbelievable if we didn't see cross over characters in the regular hero films now, the world is only so big. After the events in Civil War, this made the most sense. This new Spider-Man will be leading the future Avengers, he might be our next ironman, and I'm all in. People are never happy, its freakin' SPIDER-MAN! It'd be like Superman finally returning to a DC universe, after wanting him for ten years! He's the face of Marvel, and he's here to stay, so shutty and enjoy the ride or let us who do like this Spider-Man.

Dark Days

The low rumble of thunder was consuming the east side of the city, as small drops of rain started to come down upon the buildings and the unsuspecting citizens that happened to be walking below. It was a dreary day to say the least, and Anna was feeling every bit of it as she drudged up the steps to her studio apartment above. She waltzed through the door in a haze, as she seemed to mostly be in these days. She set her phone and keys down on a stack of overdue bills, the top letter being an eviction notice printed in big red letters. She paid no attention as she flopped down on her beat up old couch, and breathed a sigh of exasperation. Life seemed to not be going her way as of late, as she got back up and retrieved her phone. She had plenty of unread text messages, but she was too careless to read them these days. She also noticed she has a few missed calls, she quickly scrolled to find out who they were, but was disappointed to see it was her mother, she was expecting someone else. She saw she had a voicemail from her, and opened it to listen. “Anna!” her mom started the message out seemingly in a bad mood, “Where are you!? You know it’s your sister’s graduation ceremony, and she thinks the world of you, answer your phone! Why are you like this now a days? Ever since your accident…” her mom paused sounding as if she was starting to cry, “Just please call me back dear”. Then the message ended on that abrupt note. Anna teared up a little, and sank to a nearby wall space between her couch and her refrigerator, holding her phone to her nose, and started crying a little. She pulled her sleeves of her gray shirt over her hands halfway, for some sort of comfort. But nothing could really help her pain. She just couldn’t be happy these days, and she knew exactly why. But she couldn’t come to terms with it. She wouldn’t bear it any longer, she was going to stop this now, and be a better daughter, be a better sister, she thought to herself, wiping away some tears.

But as she was getting lost in her thoughts, she started to hear them coming to her, calling to her. She flashed her head to the right, then to the left, in a desperate attempt to look for them. Their cries were so convulsive, and in and out they went. She trembled at the thought of them coming back, but yet for some reason she craved them, she heard them coming, she closed her eyes in an attempt to shield herself from them. But she knew she had to look, she needed to. The bad things were back for her again, and she peered open her eyes to see them. In the beginning, she would only see just one, it visited her daily, and at first when it appeared it seemed so nice…so innocent. But as time progressed, so did they. She would see more and more, and they didn’t look so nice after quite some time. They also went from being friends, to becoming her enemy, they twisted her inside and out, messed with her mind, and made her do things she didn’t want to do but she always felt compelled.

But now she slowly opened her eyes, at first, she saw a blur of black shadowy figures. But she wiped away her tears, and there were more now than ever. The bad things were something you’d see in a nightmare, which is what Anna considered her life. They swarmed all around her small apartment, all staring directly at her. They sort of floated slightly above ground, they had human skull like faces, and darkness is what they were made of. The one she knew from the very beginning was right in front of her, peering down at her. She cocked her head to one side and tried to separate herself form them as much as possible. “Go away!” She screamed as tears ran down her face. She was sweating now with anxiety, and her hands started to shake. “It’s okay dear” the shadowy demon like thing in front said, “You know we never want to hurt you”. Anna knew it was a lie, but then again, she thought. Was it? They never DID technically hurt her. In fact, they actually helped her in a way, she thought. The shadowy figure reached out its hand, and she grabbed it reluctantly as the darkness jolted through her body. She suddenly felt a rush for a moment, and breathed deep, as her trembling stopped. “Anna, why do you always fear us? We’re your friends, aren’t we?” said another figure to the side. Anna gulped and nodded slowly, “I suppose…but because of you…I…” Anna was cut off by the shadow up front, who put a black finger like gesture up to her lips to silence her. “Anna” the voice sounded so genuine, “Anna, we are here to help you, you need us, and we need you”. Anna took a step back, even though as she was near them, she felt so…alive. She looked out the window behind her, at the stormy clouds, and the drizzling rain, she wondered if others out there had these…these things looking after them as well. “Anna come back to us” said another one from the back, there was probably at least 25 filling her apartment right now.
Anna turned back to face them, “I think…I think I want…” but again, she was cut off by the leader so to speak. “We’ve been thinking too, and we want you Anna” their voices seemed to have an eerie echo like noise when they spoke, it was the scariest yet most soothing sound one could hear. “We want you to come with us this time”. Anna looked puzzled and almost scared, taken aback by these words. “Go where exactly?” she questioned them taking a step back. But the shadows moved closer to make up for lost space. “To a place with no pain…no misery. A place where you don’t have to hurt anymore”. “But what about my family?” she said looking down, remembering what she was thinking about before they showed up. “They’ll be fine without you…maybe even better off without you hurting them all the time” said a shadow from beside her, in her ear. Anna teared up a little, believing they were probably right. She couldn’t stand how she hurt them all the time anymore, but she didn’t know how to stop it. “I just…” she said and now really started to sob, falling to her knees. “…want them to be happy, but I want to feel happiness again too”. “Oh Anna, we know you do dear, we will always be here to make you happy”. The lead shadow came forward and said, and it came down eye level with her. She looked through many tears into the face of darkness, but it seemed so inviting somehow, she wanted to believe with all her heart they were her answer, they were there for her like no one else. She got up off her knees and stayed in eye contact with it. Her crying ceasing for the time being, but her face red and wet all the same. She peered into the face, but something inside her was pulling her back. She kept seeing flashes of her family, she turned away and held her head. The shadow pulled her back in, “No Anna you must keep coming closer, let us take you” it said in a whisper. Anna walked in further, as they all surrounded her now. She felt so alive, as the darkness soared through her veins. She stretched out her arms and let them swarm all around her, as she fell to her knees, faster and faster they flew around, and the more she felt them. The more she felt that happiness she longed for.

But again, she saw flashes of her family. She saw her mom and dad standing there, looking disappointed at her, but more than that, genuinely sad to see her go. As if they would be sad forever. The darkness crept a little farther away. “Let us in Anna!” they screamed at her. She stood up and held her head in extreme pain. She started seeing her sister now, crying and calling for her. She turned now in extreme fashion almost falling over. “Anna, don’t you want happiness!?” one screamed in her face. As Anna now screamed in extreme agony. “Yes!” she cried out to the ceiling. “More than anything!”, she continued as the shadows kept spinning around her faster and faster grabbing for her. She kept feeling that pulse of adrenaline from them, that feeling she craved. But she knew she couldn’t let them take her, she knew she had more to fight for. She screamed so loudly you would of thought the windows would break, as they screamed back. “I DON’T NEED YOU ANYMORE!” She screamed, then suddenly everything stopped.

She closed her eyelids in and out, everything was blurry, she saw flashes of her apartment, her mom’s worried face, her dad’s look of horror. She saw other people she didn’t recognize in blue jackets. As darkness faded in and out. She opened her eyes to see her sister mouthing the words “I love you”, and even though she wasn’t sure if she was, Anna thought she herslef was smiling. “Well mam” said an EMT next to Anna’s stretcher that she was currently on, speaking to her mother. “I think she’s going to be fine, judging from all of the pills we saw thrown up” I think she saved herself. “Somehow…she saved herself”.
